Moorhead Lions Meeting Minutes

Habitat for Humanity:
We had a speaker from Habitat for Humanity.  Habitat has over 150 families per year that attend the interest meetings.  They average around 5 home builds per year.  She visited several area clubs.  Kevin Spaulding of the Dilworth Lions has challenged the area clubs to contribute.
Secretary’s report:
Sandy a report from the Dec meeting.   Dawn motioned to approve, Missie seconded.

Dues are due. Please pay your dues if you need to.  There are 7 dues that are outstanding.
Singles- 70 per year.  
Couples- 100 per year. 
You can also pay half now and the half later

Old Business:
-Sharon gave the report regarding the District Governor’s meeting held on Dec 19 in conjunction with the Midday Central Lions.
-Mid- Winter Convention 2012 is Feb 3-5 in Grand Forks at the Alerus Center/ Canad Inns. 
Brenda motioned that to approve the above Parade of Green donations, Sharon seconded.
Motion approved.
-Bowling Tournament- March 3rd at Sunset Lanes
 11am Set up- 
 1pm start time
 Posters were not ready as of yet but Sue is going to send out some old ones in the next few days that we can tweak possibly for those that need them to distribute at events this week.  Sandy plans to have the poster ready in the next few days as well.  We can have 24 teams this year
We should have team registrations sent to

100$ team of four.
As in prior years, we plan to have :

Raffle (casino)
“White Elephant” table. 
New Business:
-Per the speaker, we are going to meet the challenge set for us by the Dilworth Club and donate x amount of dollars to Habitat for Humanity. Pam is going to check on February 14th to see if the Dakota Med Foundation can match that donation.

Motion approved. 
-We have a Zone meeting this Thurs Jan 26th.  6:30pm Social hour, 7pm dinner. Cost is 8.00 @ the Dilworth Community Center. 
There will be a speaker from Churches United and LeaderDog.  
Please let Sue or Brenda know if you plan to attend.
-Sandy let us know about Project Night Light which provides a comfort bag for children who have been abused or neglected.  Sandy will see about having her come and speak at one of our meetings.

Moorhead Lions Club
The Moorhead Lions group is made up of young professionals from the Fargo-Moorhead area. The group was established in June 2007 and has made raised money to support organizations such as Goats for Haitians, MN Lions Eye Bank, Lions Hearing Foundation, Lion’s Leader Dog Program, Coats for Kids, Clay-Wilkin Head Start, the Ronald McDonald House and more.

Ken Fredette from Lakes and Prairies Community Partnership
Serving Clay and Wilkin Counties
They offer 50-60 programs and services. Ever-changing.
They have three goals essentially
1. Eliminate Poverty
2. Empower Families
3. Engage communities
Major themes/trends within the community they are dealing with now
Housing, homelessness, childcare
A few programs they are offering now include, Rainbow Bridge, work camp in which 100 kids fix homes in communities such as Hawley, Breckenridge, Georgetown. Also, handle the childcare resource and referral.
How can our club support Lakes and Prairies?
We can volunteer for the group workforce, Project Homeless Connect, and the Tax Site. Promote, volunteer etc.
Courtney and Andy presented on Homeless and Hungry, a program through their church. They have many events through the year to support this program. A motion was made to cover the cost of what was needed for them to reach their monetary goal individually.
Homeless and Hungry is Oct 16-17th this year. Please contact Sheila if interested in participating.

Riverarts- yes we want to continue to do this.
Potato Days- keep the location. Better sound system for the parade, new banner, having the candy walkers walk further back, and having better sucker holders were issues of concern that were brought to attention. It helped to have Sharon doing the tickets.
Pancake Feed
We need to get our name out more. More promotion. May ask to change day if possible. More promotion through Greater Moorhead Days.
Sue mentioned that the Friends of the Wetlands in Detroit Lakes is willing to buy our leftovers next year from the feed.
Other ideas for summer
Facepainting at the Cobber Feed, corporate parties
Adopt a Highway
Need to get a weekend picked out. Kyle will email us all with possible weekends.
Shirts- Everyone felt the design was good. We can now order 1 @ a time as well.
Haiti- Cots and Cribs. Second order of bigger ones for adults and older kids were ordered.

New Business
October meeting we will do our annual membership night. Everyone bring a friend! Oct 26
Bowling Tournament has been scheduled for March 6. We need to start getting door prizes together.
Governor’s Night- We decided to invite Moorhead Midday and plan the evening for 4th Tuesday in May.
Glasses- Brenda received another request for glasses. Going with what we have done in the past, we donate the money and go through Walmart.

Scootin’ to the next Level: Was a success. Darla and Sandy made it to see Lion Mark Schmidt of the Perham Lions take off Thurs April 22nd for Minneapolis.
Lions Ladies Night- was Fri April 23rd. Fun was had by all.
We welcomed Ann as an official member! Congrats!
New Business:
Riverarts is June 8 July 13 and August 10 this summer. We discussed improving on what we already do as well as adding some variety and other services.
Potato Days dates – Aug 27, 28 125$ for 10x20 booth. It was decided that we should do this again this summer as well as participate in the parade.

-Service opportunities with our club and Oak Grove
-Success of Fill the Dome
-“Can-struction”
-Mission trips, such as the 10th Grade trip to Texas this year
-Flood fight 2009 and 2010.
We are supposed to call him if we have ideas about partnering with Oak Grove students on service ventures, or giving presentations etc.

Bowling Tournament:

We spent the majority of this time discussing what we could do better and what went well that day.
Main points from this discussion:

Darla has been in contact with Lion Steve from the Perham Lions in order to set things up.
Possible start date for Lion Mark to leave from Moorhead
April 21. Darla is going to get a firm date on that.
They are very excited about this.
Things that were suggested that we could do:
-Alert media
-get fire trucks/police to make noise with their sirens
-have a few members ride with Lion Mark a mile or two.
Also talked about putting up a challenge to those clubs in our district near or around highway 10.
Voted on a donation

Time to elect officers again. It was decided that we should keep with a two year term. There was no discussion. Everyone thought this was great.

Riverarts, Potato Days, Fly-Pancake fundraiser-never too early to start thinking about. Darla should have the Riverarts form soon.
Instead of adding more events to our plate, it was suggested by Sharon that we improve on what we do. Fair hair was a suggestion. Bigger signs, more flash to our booths especially for Potato Days.

Rousing Success!
We had our second annual Lions bowling tournament on Sat March 6. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this, helped, made donations, anything! It was a fantastic, fun day.
