Major themes/trends within the community they are dealing with now

Housing, homelessness, childcare

A few programs they are offering now include, Rainbow Bridge, work camp in which 100 kids fix homes in communities such as Hawley, Breckenridge, Georgetown. Also, handle the childcare resource and referral.

How can our club support Lakes and Prairies?
We can volunteer for the group workforce, Project Homeless Connect, and the Tax Site. Promote, volunteer etc.

Old Business

Riverarts- yes we want to continue to do this.

Potato Days- keep the location. Better sound system for the parade, new banner, having the candy walkers walk further back, and having better sucker holders were issues of concern that were brought to attention. It helped to have Sharon doing the tickets.

Pancake Feed
We need to get our name out more. More promotion. May ask to change day if possible. More promotion through Greater Moorhead Days.
Sue mentioned that the Friends of the Wetlands in Detroit Lakes is willing to buy our leftovers next year from the feed.

Other ideas for summer
Facepainting at the Cobber Feed, corporate parties

Adopt a Highway
Need to get a weekend picked out. Kyle will email us all with possible weekends.

Shirts- Everyone felt the design was good. We can now order 1 @ a time as well.

Haiti- Cots and Cribs. Second order of bigger ones for adults and older kids were ordered.

Brent motioned to approve covering the difference, Pam seconded.

Governor’s night: Was March 9. Brent, Sherrie, Pam, Brenda, and Darla attended. We listened to DG Jeanine Windels speak. It was a very good time.

Bowling Tournament:
Rousing success! Congrats everyone!
We spent the majority of this time discussing what we could do better and what went well that day.
Main points from this discussion:

- Scootin’ to the next level:
Darla has been in contact with Lion Steve from the Perham Lions in order to set things up.
Possible start date for Lion Mark to leave from Moorhead
April 21. Darla is going to get a firm date on that.

They are very excited about this.

Things that were suggested that we could do:

-Alert media
-get fire trucks/police to make noise with their sirens
-have a few members ride with Lion Mark a mile or two.

Also talked about putting up a challenge to those clubs in our district near or around highway 10.

Voted on a donation

More details about this to come obviously! Keep up to date with your email.

Brent motioned to accept/ Sharon seconded.

New Business:

Time to elect officers again. It was decided that we should keep with a two year term. There was no discussion. Everyone thought this was great.

Brent motioned to accept/ Sharon seconded.

Riverarts, Potato Days, Fly-Pancake fundraiser-never too early to start thinking about. Darla should have the Riverarts form soon.

Instead of adding more events to our plate, it was suggested by Sharon that we improve on what we do. Fair hair was a suggestion. Bigger signs, more flash to our booths especially for Potato Days.

- Our annual bowling tournament is March 6. We will need to be there between 11-11:30 to begin set-up. 1:30 when the first shift would start. We have 12 lanes reserved this year. As last year, we will have the 50/50 drawing, sucker sales, and silent auction. We discussed having a drawing at the very end for a gift certificate to the pro shop. Sandy suggested offering a chance for two or three prizes to be given away.

At this point we need donations donations donations! When you receive a donation please email everyone so we know what was received!

New Business:

-We have had a number of requests for glasses in the past few months. We decided it would be best to partner with Wal-mart and direct requests to Wal-mart and we would offer to pay 100$ towards new glasses.

Sharon motioned to accept, Dawn seconded.

Motion passed.

-Governor’s Night is March 9th. District Governor Jeanine Windels will be in town to visit both Moorhead clubs. It will be at the Courtyard at Marriot, hosted by the Moorhead Midday Central. There will be a meal that will cost around 10-15$. If interested in attending please contact Brenda.

-Mark Schmidt of the Perham Lions is riding a scooter, non-motorized, from Moorhead-Minneapolis, in order to raise funds for Taylor, a teen from Monticello who is battling burns on 80% of her body. Her wish is to go to Paris. He will start in late-April and arrive Sat May 1 in Minneapolis at the Make-a-wish ball. Along the way, he is going to be stopping to meet Lions at city limit signs for photo opps. Brenda suggested that once our bowling tournament is over we should decide on an amount to donate. We need to donate by March 31.

-Brenda informed us of a possible partnering with MSUM football players.
Matt Oachs, who is in charge of the alumni football team at MSUM, mentioned to her that MSUM football players are expected to become involved with their community and various volunteer projects. A partnering with them would provide us with some extra man-power at our events, possibly more participation in events at MSUM, etc. Darla suggested that this would be good as it would possibly encourage these students to join a Lions organization in the future whether it be our Lion club while in college or elsewhere after college.

-Sherrie handed out some packets to the group about the need for Veteran volunteers in Clay County. One does not need to be a veteran to be a veteran volunteer. They are currently experiencing a volunteer shortage and one afternoon a month would help out greatly if interested, contact Sherrie. Darla also has a few packets left over from the meeting. Also here is the contact information if you would like to contact them directly.
